This book was incredibly wonderful. If you like sophisticated fantasy series with a political lean, ‘real’ relationships and by real, I mean human and characters you become invested in, you will really enjoy this book. So it’s easy to remember who is who.

I heard about this book in a reddit thread about political fantasy novels, and it sounded like it was down my alley. I also enjoyed the political aspect of this novel.

I just kept begging for the Harshini chapters to be over so I could read more about the juicy drama and political maneuvering. Even the main villain has a reason for the things they do that isn’t necessarily all evil. Sure, there were characters I didn’t like, and things happened that I didn’t like.

By the time I reached the book’s surprise ending I was sorry to say good-bye. The Second Sons trilogy remains my favorite, but I’m excited to read the rest of this trilogy! I picked this book up from a buy 3 get 1 free bin in a little bookstore on black Friday.

Fallon is a master of pacing. It’s a very gratifying arc for the most part, and one of the story’s strengths. This review has been hidden because it contains wolfb,ade. Without prior knowledge of the characters, Fallon has to work doubly hard to keep them interesting as she introduces the palace intrigue.

Ok, this is going to be a long review so be prepared. Especially of the places what in the name of all is Fardohnya? Throughout reading, I have been very much torn between wolfblad question whether this is actually a well-written book or not. Fallon’s trilogy launch opens 10 years after the events previously recounted in the Hythrun Chronicles, in a land where dangerous intrigues are always stirring and a royal case of switched identities heralds the renewal of old enmities.

It’s all for selfish gain, but she does try to justify it at least. The Game of Thrones books have largely ruined Fantasy novels for me – most others I’ve read get compared to them and fall short. Her brother is the High Prince of Hythria, and, in this fiercely patriarchal society, her fate will be decided on his whim.
